Expert Opinion

Now here come the tips to find your way for the funded Ph.D., if you don’t have a sponsor from your native country, then you can apply for UM financial aid in which you work as a research assistant (RA) in Postgraduate study and get monthly allowance with full fee waiver available for maximum 07 semesters (so you must complete your Ph.D. in 3.5 years, normally it is done in 03 years)

How to Apply for Research Assistant

  • First find some relevant supervisor at UM, he/she must agree to take you as RA (Research Assistant)
  • Then, you apply in UM and pay the full first fee as an initial step. For example, in engineering, the 1st-semester fee is 18000 MYR (07 lac approx.) and get admitted there.
  • Now apply for UM financial aid program (i.e. RA).
  • If RA application is accepted, then your full fee excluding the admission fee is returned to you (18000 MYR – 4000 MYR = 14000 MYR) (Fee Waiver) and you will also get a monthly stipend
  • The availability of funds differs from department to department

Research Assistant Benefits

You will get a stipend from 1500 MYR ~ 1800 MYR, which is enough to live in Kuala Lumpur as an individual. Now a day, a Ph.D. student with a minimum of 1800 MYR can manage monthly expenses very easily. For masters, it’s 1500 minimum.

  • After you start working as RA there are several opportunities for you as well and chances to enhance your monthly stipend as well based on grants
  • You will also be able to work on commercial projects of companies in Malaysia
  • You will have a better opportunity to have industrial research experience

You can follow the same procedures for research masters as given above for Ph.D. Also if you have above 3.7 CGPA in Bachelors, you can take admission in Ph.D. (Fast Track Ph.D. or MS leading to Ph.D.)
